Team History

Established in the Fall of 1995 by Sasha Reife

Sasha was a Russian Exchange student from St. Petersburg, Russia. For the first year, he taught all lessons. In March of 1996, Sasha led GU Ballroom to its first competition Case Western. Then, we had 14 girls and 3 guys.

The 1996-1997 Academic Year and "The Upset of the Century"

This was a big year for us. We grew to 110 people and became recognized worldwide. In the Spring of 1997, we competed at the International Ballroom Dance Competition in England. It was at this competition where we won the International Title in Formation. Our win was coined "The Upset of the Century".

The 1998-1999 Academic Year

Sasha handed the presidency over to Elaine Cowen. Under her leadership we won Internationally again in England and we continued to perform exceptionally well at competitions within the United States.

The 1999-2000 Academic Year

Christel Green was President of the club and continued to lead the club to success.

The 2000-2001 Academic Year

Kevin Gomes and Kristin Adair were co-presidents. Here, we won National Team title in Columbus, Ohio, the highest we have ever placed as a team. We also placed first in many individual competitions in England, most notably Lindy.

The 2001-2002 Academic Year

Kevin and Kristin continued their Co-Presidency where the team continued to perform well and individuals continued to win.

The 2002-2003 Academic Year

Led by Elizabeth Chan, individuals continued to perform well. We started to change our focus toward the on-campus community by participating in Rangila Mix and revitalizing Social Classes.

The 2003-2004 Academic Year

The Club was led by Jennifer Ashley. We witnessed a sizeable growth in membership and hosted more dances on-campus. We also increased our on-campus presence with very successful Social Classes. Key members of the Club this year were: Kim Howell, Lauren Salvati, Amanda Hamilton, Katherine Magalif, David Duarte, Ily Zislin, Julie Garneau, Meg Zellers and Matt Connolly.

The 2004-2005 Academic Year

Georgina Murata is this year's new president leading the team board comprised of: Mike Cantilo, Laura Luppens, Kinga Janik, Julia Salo, and Charlene Brown. We will be attending many more competitions this year as well as hosting some fun dances around campus.
